Welcome: Hero by Night

Hero by Night

The Collective of Heroes is proud to welcome “Hero by Night”. In 2006 D.J. Coffman won the Comic Book Challenge held by Platinum Studios and NBC at San Diego Comicon. His winning project: “Hero by Night”! In May 2008 due to reasons we don’t need to talk about anymore “Hero by Night” went into “H”iatus. Now he is back for good and he became a member of our little collective, too! How cool is that?

Welcome D.J.! It’s great to see HBN returning!

The Collective of Heroes is proud to welcome “The Adventures of Gyno-Star”. Since August 2010 Rebecca Cohen publishes these satirical and irreverent adventures of the world’s favorite feminist superhero, Gyno-Star and her sidekick Little-Sappho “fighting the forces of evil and male chauvinism”.

Welcome Rebecca!

Welcome: Tales of the Checkered Man

Tales of a Checkered Man

The Collective of Heroes is proud to welcome “Tales of the Checkered Man”. Denver Brubaker started to present his “love letter to caped-crusaders, classic adventure pulps and traditional newspaper strips” online in April 2010. It combines a great art style with brilliant storytelling and funny characters.

Welcome Denver!

Welcome: Mighty Monocle

The Collective of Heroes is proud to welcome “Mighty Monocle”. Ralph was the worst superhero in New York. But he is no longer in New York. He is in England now, working for the British Government’s National Superhero Service (NSS) Peesingdon-on-Sea, England. He is “THE MIGHTY MONOCLE”! Just a few days ago this funny little webcomic created by the British cartoonist ROLFE celebrated its first birthday.

So congratulations and welcome ROLFE!

Wallpaper Donations Drive

The Wallpaper of the Comic Creators for Freedom

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

Wednesday, January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. To participate, three members of the Collective of Heroes (Aidan Casserly, Lou Graziani, Arne Schulenberg) joined the Comic Creators for Freedom – a group of over 120 comic book creators who volunteered their artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause.

Currently there are 27 million enslaved people worldwide – more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the past, what is happening today is happening in secret. It won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.

So here is what the Comic Creators for Freedom did: Each creator contributed an original drawing of one of his or her own female characters – and these were combined into a single wallpaper image presenting the most epic snowfight of all times! The wallpaper features characters from all over the web, including Girls with Slingshots, The Dreamland Chronicles, Kukuburi, Earthsong Saga, Looking for Group, Love and Capes, The Dreamer, and tons more! Donate today to download this unique, once-in-a-lifetime wallpaper.

The Donations Drive will last for two weeks, from Monday January 9th – 20th. All proceeds will be split evenly between Love 146 and Gracehaven House – two organizations working on rehabilitation of victims and prevention of this crime.

To learn more about the CCfF visit www.comiccreatorsforfreedom.com. To learn more about the problem, visit http://love146.org/slavery. (Note: contains adult themes and actual accounts of sex slavery.)

Welcome: Tales of the Emerald Yeti

I’m proud to announce the inclusion of Kenn Minter’s “Tales of the Emerald Yeti” to the Collective of Heroes.  Looking at the excellent art, you might assume that this is some sort of retro romp.  It’s not.  Kenn Minter has a surprisingly edgy style that won me over back when he was producing “The Experts,” and some of the subject matter he touches on is downright “out” there.  Welcome on board, Kenn!

Webcomic Spotlight – Next Town Over

Next Town OverOver on The Specialists, we occasionally review other webcomics that we think are especially good. Here’s our latest review, for Next Town Over.

At a glance, Erin Mehlos’ Next Town Over is a western, but on closer inspection it’s much more than that. There’s a little steampunk, a little of the supernatural… Let’s just put it this way, it’s a comic in which a seemingly undead woman rides her steam-powered cyberhorse as she hunts down a pyrokinetic gambler. In short, it’s awesome. Continue reading Webcomic Spotlight – Next Town Over

Magellan Masters – creative competition!

Here's the winner of the previous comp!A chance to win $US75!
I ran something similar to this about two years ago and had a real blast so it’s time for another go. Basically all you need to do is create some Magellan “fan art” and submit it by January 25, 2012. I’ll then ask Magellan readers to decide their favourite via an online poll – the winner of that poll will be announced a week later. Pretty simple, huh? Just read all the entry info first and away you go!

(BTW, if you know someone who might be interested, please let them know…)
